For a layman, it is really difficult to determine the sex of a chinchilla. Even expert chinchilla breeder sometimes makes errors. Males have wide and big head with smaller bodies. Female chinchillas have parallel rows of nipples. Before you introduce a male and female chinchilla for mating, it is important that you first make them recognize each others odours. This is possible by placing their cages next to each other. Then after some days, place the male in the female cage. If by chance they fight, immediately separate them.
